Contact me for: Collaboration for anything on self care, mindfulness, and/or social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools; Presentations on self care, mindfulness, and/or SEL; solution oriented counseling grounded in personal skill building.

In 1995 I graduated from Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois with a Bachelor’s in Science - Teacher Education...Physical Education to be more specific. I moved out to San Diego, California where I worked as an on site substitute teacher and coach for a few years. In the fall of 1997 I got my first teaching job at Cary Grove high school in Cary, Illinois. I taught PE and was assigned a Health class. I fell in love with teaching Health. I stayed at CG for five years and then moved back to Southern California on a whim assuming I would find work by the time the new school year began. I was focused on being a full time health teacher. Sure enough, only weeks before the school year began, a health teaching position found me at Hemet high school in Hemet, California. I stayed at HHS for three years and bought and sold a home at the right time to finance my tuition at the University of Denver for a Master of Social Work degree. More specifically the degree I earned from DU was in clinical Social Work with a focus on high risk youth, as well as some additional coursework in Marriage and Family therapy at Denver Family Institute. I was hired as a school social worker in Douglas County school district in the fall of 2007 where I have continued to work. Presently I work at Eagle Academy, a night alternative school in DCSD, as well as two days a week at Stone Mountain elementary school which feels like a graduate level internship...I learn so much each day I am present at STME. Additionally, I just began working with Virtual Academy, an online school in the Jefferson County school district.

Several years ago I was involved in some crisis situation at the high school I was working at at the time and after the crisis cleared I found myself in my office sitting with the student. The student was now calm and I had been helpful in getting him to that point. However, I didn’t know what to do to help him on a day to day basis...what skills could I teach him to help him manage his daily life situation? This type of situation happened routinely. I knew that I cared, I knew I believed in the dignity and worth of the individuals I worked with, and I knew I could advocate on their behalf...but how do I help them manage their feelings? improve their communication with others? help them to recognize their own perspective and the perspectives of others? In frustration and a desire to stop this nagging helplessness that I held, I googled something about teaching social and emotional skills. I remember writing down the three skills that I found and taping them to the inside of my desk: recognizing emotions, anxiety reduction skills, and mindfulness. I figured that I could focus on the two that made sense to me, as I had never heard of mindfulness.

The more I worked with students as a social worker the more exposed I became to high risk behaviors like self harm (cutting most specifically) and suicidal ideation. The Children’s Hospital seemed to refer students that had been treated in their inpatient program to DBT groups for ongoing support and intervention. When I began learning more about DBT I then heard about mindfulness. I didn’t fully understand the idea of mindfulness until I had the opportunity to spend several months in the mountains. I read a simple book and then practiced. The results were so immediate and so transforming that I chose to begin teaching it that fall to students. By the spring semester I put a class curriculum together to teach at the alternative school. The curriculum is called I Am. and it follows a basic format that includes a mindfulness practice, affirmation/validation (sell life), connecting questions, and a specific skill/theme. As of now I have 6-8 individual lessons that continue to grow and change as I learn more and experience the teaching with students. I also use the same format for the elementary age students.

It’s not hard to grasp a conceptual understanding of the need for social and emotional learning in schools. A few basic realities do stand in the way of implementation based on my own personal experience and observation. Teachers and parents feel overburdened and overwhelmed. Enter stress response. The amygdala responds to the ‘perceived’ threat. Examples of perceived threats are in abundance when faced with ‘one more thing to do’ = attack! When the amygdala is on the prefrontal cortex is off. Enter emotional dysregulation (or all things connected with executive functioning). When dysregulated we just react and appear to be functioning from an irrational state of mind. Check out Chade-Meng Tan’s Search Inside Yourself presentation at Google Talks. If we entertain this analogy then what is the point in introducing anything new. Enter self care...now we’re talking.

Chade Meng Tan mentions that effective leaders learn to align with people’s self interest so that goodness is a necessary and unavoidable side effect. It is my opinion that if we want SEL to be effectively implemented in the school setting, we should begin by promoting self care to staff as well as parents. More specifically it would be helpful to implement the practice of mindfulness. How cool is this little fact: Comfortable attention to breath promotes an increase in self awareness, focused attention, self-regulation, and stress reduction. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.
