Dr. Julie Causton is an Associate Professor in the Inclusive and Special Education Program in the Department of Teaching and Leadership at Syracuse University. Her teaching, research and consulting are guided by a passion for inclusive education. Julie’s work focuses on best practices in inclusive education that promote belonging in schools. Particular areas of expertise are: school reform, inclusive teacher training, collaboration, humanistic behavioral supports, lesson planning, and providing invisible adult supports. As a former elementary, middle and high school special education teacher, Julie knows firsthand how inclusion leads to better outcomes for students.
Her published works have appeared in over thirty journals, in such journals as Exceptional Children, Teaching Exceptional Children, Journal of Research in Childhood Education, International Journal of Inclusive Education, Behavioral Disorders, Studies in Art Education, Camping Magazine, Remedial and Special Education, and Equity and Excellence in Education. She has published several books including The Paraprofessional’s Handbook of Inclusive Education; The Principal’s Handbook for Inclusive Education; The Speech and Language Pathologist’s Handbook for Inclusive Education; The Occupational Therapist’s Handbook for Inclusive Education. She is currently writing two books entitled The Educators Guide to Inclusive Schooling and 30 Days to the Co-Taught Classroom.

As an educational consultant, Julie works with administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals to help promote and improve inclusive practices. Her dynamic presentations focus on responsive, and engaging ways to educate children with autism, challenging behavior, or any disability label within the context of general education. She has created a web series called Inspire Inclusion, which currently provides parents with the inspiration, skills, and tools to effectively advocate for their child’s inclusion in a school system. The web series will soon address professional development to support administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals create and maintain truly inclusive schools.
